How Search Works

How useful do you think to know how Google search works? I believe it is essential if you want your site or site of your friend or site of your church/organization prosper and bring the fruit.

Let’s say you have a website that gives information about event that you are leading and you want as more people as possible to know about this event and subscribe to it. You made a questionnaire about source of knowledge about event among later visitors and found out that only 10% has come to your event via website,  what a disaster! you had only 10 people registered to event  and only 1 got to know about it through the website! You start to look at site’s statistics and find that only 5-10 people visiting your site during a day, there are definitely more people that you come across on daily basis then your site has visitors! Why is that so? because major source of all visitors is search engine. Search engine indexing your pages and returns results while person looks for words related to your event theme. But for some reason when someone makes search in Google, your event’s promotion appears on the page number 24 (for example) Regular user of internet would NEVER go that far, people look through 10 pages at max, the rest are lost for their attention.

The video above describes how Google search system works. Google search is the major search that people use at the moment thus it is the major source of visits. Google crawler goes through links on websites related to searches and first it checks those sites with higher rank then lower. So, that means your site should have more links on other sites. But if your site is referred by sites that are not related to your topic, crawler would often ignore your search results. Also if your site link is one of a million links on the other site, Google considers this link as spam.

When person inserts some words in search field in Google, crawler checks all indexed links by hierarchy. For example you have Christian Conference about Spiritual gifts. Potential visitor comes to Google and makes search for “Spiritual gifts”. Now Google goes through billions saved links, first it searches highest ranked sites that have words “Spiritual gifts” in URL, title, content, links, then follows links with the same type of search – first in URL, title, content and links, and so on. Let’s say your site is and it is linked on,,,, Non of those have Spiritual gifts in URL but some are related to Christianity and missions, Google takes a note about it. has nothing to do with Christianity and Spiritual gifts, so, links to your site from will be ignored. Facebook and Twitter have special status and crawled differently. Links on social networks are VERY valuable and usually bring a LOT of visitors. Now, has rank 5 out of 10 but unfortunately it has thousands of other links and your link may not be the first one, however, is also there and crawler takes a note about similar domain name. has low rank 2 but your link there is one of 10-20 and has quite precise information, even precise words “Spiritual gifts”, that is definite green light for crawler. The link on leads to the page about conference  “Spiritual gifts” on and crawler finds several phrases there that contain  “Spiritual gifts” or synonymous words, this phrase even present in title of the page, WOW, says crawler, I found it!
This is extremely simplified version of what Google does to bring visitors to our pages. Many other things are considered like:

  • Topical relations
  • Number of visitors with similar searches
  • Number of pages that average visitor views on your site
  • Time that average visitor spends there
  • How often visitor leaves your site within first few seconds
  • How many visitors are coming to your site again
  • etc. etc. etc.

So, if you want more visitors, tell your friends on facebook, twitter, google plus, other social networks about your site, convince your friends to place the link to your site and not even necessary on the page with  “Spiritual gifts” information, any page on your site will do it, write about your site on your personal blog, make sure that you have essential words describing your events, somewhere at the top, in titles of your stories, use less abbreviations (DTS, SBS, etc) but use full names of events and preferable translated to different languages. Place yourself on the side of your potential visitor, what would you look for and information on your site would answer visitor’s needs. Create sub-domains on the pages that have special events descriptions.
